Happy feet...brum, brum, brum
crouching pre-kinders marching
outside in the hall
we were talking about testing
cramming exams into our air-tight schedules
lamenting, which week is best
and
will those mobile netbooks work?
They were sparking last week.
Meanwhile,
jack hammers ham
dust and fumes waft on in
Everyone's head hurts,
noses run.
Wonder if they'll stop
hammmmmmering
during testing?
I'm going back to pre-k
to brum, brum, brum
find a happy-feet march.
Worry about testing...
another day.

This is great! Love the line "Wonder if they'll stop hammmmmmmering" - you feel the hammers in your head, with all those mmmm's. Pre-K is the place to be when the whole school is testing...or when not!
ReplyDeleteHi Maureen!
ReplyDeleteI just took a look at your blog and am just...inspired! What fun. I didn't see a way to follow your blog, though (or join it). Did I miss something? Can't wait to read more of your work. Also, I see you live in Silver Springs! I used to live and teach in MD--in fact, I'll be there next week at the SoMIRAC conference! Yippee!
Happy Teaching! -Janiel
Teachers often tell me that seeing my students (pre-k) helps them stay sane during testing season.
ReplyDeleteYes! Hooray for pre-k! We should all spend time there :)
DeleteLike the image of happy feet and the sound they make...testing UGH!...you're right...happy feet does make it better.
ReplyDelete:) You bet! Thanks for your comment and for visiting!
DeleteWow! Such contrasts! The tests! Those happy marching feet! The drumming! You've captured the cacophony so perfectly!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Carol! Glad it's Friday so we can all escape the dust and noise for a bit! Have a great weekend!
DeleteYou have such a strong voice in this, moving from distraction to distraction, holding on to that which is most important, the pre-kinders! Hope the hammers go away soon!
ReplyDeleteWe wish, Linda. But, it will continue into next year. They're renovating and expanding our very old school...which is a good thing, but, geeeezzzzz!
DeleteSound and other senses are captured here in a fairly light-hearted way, but this doesn't take away from the more serious idea behind your poem; in fact, it does quite the opposite. This is a great window into a teacher's mind. Nicely crafted!
ReplyDeleteThank you so very much, Paul! Thanks for visiting and commenting! I appreciate the encouragement (just as the kiddos do!).
